Fitness Circuit and Gym Equipment Launch Day, 5th May 2012
All the hard work paid off and a brilliant day was had by all.
After the stresses of the appalling weather leading up to the event, and the is it going to have to be postponed trauma's - the weather held off just enough to let the event go ahead- My was it cold though !! Thank goodness as there had been weeks and weeks of preparation!
A few of the Friends were there from 8.30 am, to welcome on board our early arrivals. After careful planning we were soon on the way, setting up ready for the official opening at 12.30pm.
The circuit was officially opened by Richard Caborn and Johnny Nelson who both gave a talk regarding the benefits of having such wonderful sporting facilities on the doorstop of the local community; we would like to thank them so much for supporting us on a freezing cold Saturday!
It was great to see local councillors come along to celebrate too, Bryan Lodge, Denise Fox, Karen McGowan and Mike Pye who has now retired but gave us encouragement in the early days to take the group forward and he always fought our corner. Thanks it was great to see you!
It was fantastic to be part of such a great team effort, everyone pulled together and got everything done for a really good day.
A MASSIVE thanks to Big Al from Big Als funhouse for loaning us 3 gazebo's and coming along and putting them up for us , as well as returning later in the day and taking them down and away- we really appreciate this Al, very much !!
The day brought about community groups, including the Support Dogs, Moss Valley Wildlife Group, Scouts with their archery, Hi 5 group, the Urban Arts van, Police community safety stall and of course our own tombola, hook a duck, spin the wheel, win the monkey and bear game and our general info stall. Thanks to all who attended.
We had Totally Tasty caterers, Granelli's ices, several local business stalls, and Mags from Animals In Tuition who travelled all the way from York, with her rabbit and 2 rats to give children the opportunity to handle them and have photo's for a donation to the park. (£47 just from this) BIG thanks!!
Andrew from Activity Sheffield came along and offered fitness advice, organised sporting activities, which went down well ,especially the tug of war ! Well done all and to Andrew for doing such a good job.
Rangers from Sheffield City Council came along too and did a sunflower activity, free for families to take part - Thanks to Tom and Nick for all your help.
Mr Balloon was great he did us proud!! All day he kept the kids amused, and the adults come to think of it!
Our demonstrations in our Amphitheatre went down a storm too, we had Stepz dance troupe, Castle Black Belt martial arts, and Belrobics belly dancers; even two of the committee members were enticed to take part at this, and it was really good.
A HUGE thanks to Darren Wain and Amie Capper from Hurrar, our event organisers who worked tirelessly behind the scenes to bring the event together- and to make sure it was success.
Not forgetting Kate, Bill, June, Stuart, and their teams from Sheffield City Council for helping us organise this event, your advice, time and effort with us is very much appreciated!
Thanks to all our volunteers too- who came along and worked so hard all day, again this is really appreciated.
The event raised £550 for the park refurbishment, so well done to all that made this happen and thanks to all the community who came along and supported us by buying, playing games etc.
We have had some excellent feedback from businesses, community stalls and the community members who attended. It would seem that most people would like another event next year! This would be fantastic but we must realise that this year we were in particular celebrating the installation of the fitness circuit/ gym equipment and the very generous grant of £49,999 from the Big Lottery Fund, Community Spaces fund, delivered by Groundworks Uk on their behalf! THANKS SO MUCH.!
The lottery paid for some of the essentials such as toilets, first aiders (Thanks for your help too), entertainer and marketing. This being the case to run an event similar to this next year we would have to raise sponsorship to put one on, so if anyone’s interested - please get in touch, the sooner the better !
